Civil defence volunteers have their day

The Directorate of Karnataka Civil Defence celebrated the first Civil Defence Day on Wednesday. Jija Madhavan Hari Singh, DGP, Home Guards and Fire Services, Karnataka, said the plan is to have 50 civil defence divisions across Bangalore, with each catering to a population of 2 lakh.

BANGALORE: Now, we have a day for civil defence volunteers. It will be observed in Karnataka every December 2.
The Directorate of Karnataka Civil Defence celebrated the first Civil Defence Day on Wednesday. Jija Madhavan Hari Singh, DGP, Home Guards and Fire Services, Karnataka, said the plan is to have 50 civil defence divisions across Bangalore, with each catering to a population of 2 lakh.

Jija said: "I am extremely happy for those who have come forward to help and protect neighbourhoods, and in turn, the city. Many volunteers have done appreciable work during the floods in North Karnataka. It is the responsibility of every citizen to come forward and protect their city."
Parades by the Home Guards, civil defence units, Madras Engineering Group and Karnataka Police Band kickstarted the day-long celebration. Certificates were handed out to the volunteers.
Major General T M John opened the training stalls and said a sixth division will be opened by the first week of January.
