BENGALURU: Counting of votes is under way for Chittapur assembly seats. It is one of the most closely-watched constituency as the main battle is between Priyank Kharge of Congress and Manikanta Rathod of ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and Subhash Chandra Rathod of JDS.

Chittapur assembly constituency is one of the 224 constituencies of the Karnataka Vidhan Sabha. This constituency is reserved for the candidates to Scheduled Castes (SC).

In 2018 assembly polls, Indian National Congress candidate Priyank Kharge won the seat against Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Valmik Naik with a difference of 4,393 votes. Here are highlights of counting process:

* Priyank Kharge (72,683 votes) of Congress party maintains lead against Manikanta Rathod (57,715 votes) of BJP

* Priyanka Kharge of Congress leads with a total 2,4045 votes so far. Manikanta Rathod of BJP is at 1,7578 votes while Dr Subhaschandra Rathod of JDS is at number 3 with just 142 votes.

Chittapur is one of the nine Vidhan Sabha constituencies in Kalaburagi district of Karnataka. It is part of Gulbarga Lok Sabha constituency along with seven other assembly constituencies namely Gurmitkal, Afzalpur, Jevargi, Gulbarga Rural, Gulbarga Dakshin, Gulbarga Uttar and Sedam.

Assembly elections in Karnataka will be held in a single phase on May 10, 2023. Counting of votes will be done on May 13, 2023.
The term of the Karnataka assembly ends on May 24, 2023.

In the 224-member Karnataka assembly, the BJP currently has 119 seats, followed by the Congress with 75. The Janata Dal (Secular) or JD (S) has 28 MLAs, while two seats are vacant.

The contest in Karnataka is largely between the BJP and the Congress. However, the JD(S) has previously demonstrated its significant influence in the state's politics, serving as a crucial component of the political machinery.
