BANGALORE: A circular issued by chief secretary Sudhakar Rao asking officials not to attend meetings convened by leaders of opposition in both Houses of the legislature, has created a stir.
The circular stated that opposition leaders did not have powers to convene such meetings. "They are part of the legislature and have no administrative powers. They have the privileges of legislators and can only seek and obtain information,'' the circular said.
Leaders of opposition summoning officials to their chambers and discussing various subjects is almost a convention.
Offended by the circular, leader of opposition in the council V S Ugrappa on Friday termed it `illegal' and an attempt to shield the government's corrupt practices.
