NEW DELHI: A CCTV footage has surfaced capturing the accident that claimed the lives of Chandram Yegapagol, CEO of a Bengaluru-based software company, and five members of his family, who were travelling in their new Volvo XC90 SUV.
The accident occurred when a container truck toppled over and crashed onto the roof of their sport utility vehicle (SUV) near Nelamangala, on National Highway 48, on the outskirts of Bengaluru, on Saturday.
Yegapagol and his family were en route to their hometown, Sangli in Maharashtra.
The accident took place around 11 am near Tippagondanahalli on the Bengaluru-Tumakuru stretch of the highway.
The crash caused a significant traffic jam on the busy highway for several hours. The SUV was following a milk truck towards Tumakuru when a loaded container truck, coming from the opposite direction, suddenly lost control, crossed the median, swerved and entered the other lane.
The container truck struck the milk truck, causing both vehicles to overturn. Yegapagol, witnessing the unfolding accident, slowed down his SUV, but the container truck fell directly onto the roof of the vehicle, crushing all passengers inside.
'Truck was carrying 26 tonnes of metal'Nelamangala traffic police, investigating the freak accident, said the container truck that toppled on the victims' SUV was carrying 26 tonnes of metal.
If the truck was empty or carrying anything of less weight, those in the SUV would have survived, a senior police officer said.
Police also found that the road is slightly inclined at the spot. "If any driver is careless, there is a possibility of an accident at that spot. An accident had happened at the same spot in May 2023," he added.
