BENGALURU: Biting cold or blistering heat, rainswept outfields or dry pitches, for almost three months now, 27 teams have battled opponents and conditions with a single mission – to land the coveted Ranji Trophy riches. As the premier tournament heads towards the business end, southern powerhouses Karnataka and Tamil Nadu will face-off in the final after a decade.
Given their enviable record over the last two seasons, R Vinay Kumar and his boys will be the overwhelming favourites.
The defending champions reached the final on Saturday with a 112-run win over 40-time champions Mumbai, and go into the finale beginning at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on March 8 with an aura of invincibility about them, backed as they are by a 27-match unbeaten streak.
Flaming enthusiasm, unmatched energy and raw talent backed by a strong desire to excel have been the mantra for this champion team’s success. The team’s batting coach J Arunkumar said one of the significant contributing factors to the team’s success was communication.
“There are no ego issues in this team and that has worked wonders. Whether it’s a senior or junior, freedom of expression is a right given to each individual. This is a team that thrives on team spirit and bonding. I’ve been a part of many teams but this is a standout unit,” JAK said.
From discussing bikes, cars and their latest tattoos, their off-field camaraderie has ensured on-field bonding.
One of the senior-most members of the team, Robin Uthappa, said it was the desire to win as a team that sets this team apart. “Knowing we can win is one thing, and wanting to win badly is another. We enjoy each other’s success. Senior members of the side have inducted the youngsters well. They haven’t been under pressure and it’s a healthy and relaxed setup.”
Pacer Sreenath Arvind, who’s battled many injuries since making his first-class debut in 2008, believes the team has motivated him to come back from injuries.
“This is the best team I’ve played with in my career. The unity of this team stands out as much as the hard work and commitment. There is so much positive energy around the dressing room that it’s infectious,” said the 30-year-old.
Indeed, teamwork is the beauty of this band of boys who celebrate each other’s success the same way as they back one another in times of crisis.
