BENGALURU: Eight days after marriage, a 26-year-old woman allegedly hanged herself from the ceiling of her marital home in Ittamadu, near CK Achchukattu, South Bengaluru, on Thursday morning.
Harshitha G, who quit as an accountant four months ago after her engagement, married Chethan, a private firm employee, on November 1 at a marriage hall in Maddur, Mandya district.
CK Achchukattu police said they registered a case of dowry death under IPC section 304B against Chethan and his parents, based on a complaint lodged by Harshitha’s father, Gurumurthy.
Police said Harshitha ended her life around 5.30am when Chethan went out. Chethan returned half-an-hour later and found his bride hanging from the ceiling of their room. He immediately informed her parents and police.
“We have detained Chethan and will interrogate him to know what exactly happened between him and Harshitha after their wedding,” a police officer said.
The couple had gone to Nanjangud on Wednesday, and returned to the city. The duo got engaged six months ago.
Gurumurthy alleged that his daughter was murdered by Chethan over dowry. Police said the cause of death will be revealed in the postmortem.
Police shifted the body to Victoria Hospital and the postmortem will be taken up on Friday morning.
