Boy's death: Question mark over compensation
bellary: karnataka power transmission corporation officials seem to be indifferent to the death of a boy due to their negligence. the boy died after he touched a live wire at toranagal village in sandur taluk. when the boy died, there was an uproar. the public stormed the kptc office here and raised slogans against the attitude of officials. they also disrupted traffic for over two hours on the state highway in torangal.

the protesters said, though they had appealed to the officials to do something about the loose wire, all they got to hear was assurances. people felt had the kptc officials taken action, this incident could have been averted. when village leaders and police official contacted the kptc department for the compensation, the assistant executive engineer assured them that compensation would be given within 2-3 days. when zilla panchayat leaders raised doubts about whether there was a relief in the department for such cases, the official concerned assured them that action would be taken in a few days. he even rejected the suggestion that he contact a higher official before giving the assurance. all this happened in the presence of police officials. but even now, the compensation has not reached the aggrieved family. when this issue was raised in the recent zp general body meeting, junior engineer mallesappa minced words. zp member swamy later told reporters that according to the department, compensation for such cases would not be provided as the deceased was below 18. the executive engineer, when contacted, said the compensation would be given only after the report was received by the department. (as of now, the report has been submitted by the inspection team). unless this report recommends compensation, the department has no right to give it, he added. the question now doing the rounds is if that is the case, why did the official assure people that compensation would be given.
