BENGALURU: A teenage girl was washed away in an overflowing sewer in east Bengaluru on Sunday morning, even as
rescue workers
at the western end of the city found the body of Pushpa, who along with her mother, had been
washed away in a storm water drain
two days ago. The body of Narasamma, 18, was found 500 metres downstream within 20 minutes of her being washed away in Krishnappa Garden, CV Raman Nagar.
The body of Pushpa, 22, a resident of Laggere, was
fished out of a drain in Kumbalgodu
, 36 hours after she and her mother Meenkashi, 57, had vanished in swirling rainwaters on Friday night when an overflowing drain flooded their house. Pushpa's body had travelled 12km before it was found. As of 6:30pm Sunday, when operations were called off, Meenakshi's body had not been recovered.
Narasamma, a construction worker, had gone to relieve herself when she was swept away in the drain around 7am. Sunday's drowning takes the toll in
rain-related incidents
in the city to 16.
Venting anger, residents alleged that despite repeated requests to local representatives, no fence or warning boards had been installed along the drain.
"The girl was part of a group of 3-4 women who had gone to relieve themselves near the storm water drain. Due to heavy rainfall during the night, the water level in the drain had risen to about 5feet, and the girl slipped into the drain. The women with her tried to rescue her, in vain," said Shilpa Abhilasha, corporator, New Thippasandra ward.
Pushpa's body was recovered later in the day. "Search operations began around 7:30am, and the body was recovered at 11:30am in a storm water drain in Kumbalgodu. We will continue searching till we find her mother's body," said Pradeep K K, emergency coordinator (disaster management),
Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority
. "We will resume search operations on Monday morning. We are searching areas about 2-3km from where her daughter's body was found," added Pradeep.
