BENGALURU: Five months after TOI carried a report on how the
Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation
(BMTC) turned away a teenager whose app was providing real-time information on buses and blocked his access to their service data, an app was launched on Tuesday.
TOI on July 7, 2019, had published a report titled 'BMTC shows door to teen whose bus app a hit among passengers' highlighting how 15-year-old Nihar Thakkar's app Bengaluru buses: Track BMTC buses in real-time - had come in handy for several commuters since its launch till the utility blocked his access to its data service.
The beta version of the new app named '
MyBMTC mobile app
' developed by 15-year-old Nihar Thakkar was unveiled by BMTC chairman NS Nandiesha Reddy and
BMTC managing director C Shikha
at its headquarters in Shantinagar on Tuesday.
The features of the application include intimation on the estimated time of arrival of buses at bus stops, trip planner which enables commuters to plan their journey from origin and destination, nearby stop options, route based search options and favourites options.
BMTC officials said the new app is now available in the Google Play Store. "We will also come up with additional features by January end. It will also soon made available in iOS app store" said an official.
The app is also likely to bring relief to passengers endlessly waiting for buses and unable to access real-time data. "The new app will be more accurate and faster than the previous one," said an official. An earlier app launched in 2016 and based on GPS fitted on its 6400 add buses was riddled with bugs and technical glitches.
