BELAGAVI

: Home minister

MB Patil

scoffed at suggestions that the

coalition

would collapse and the BJP would form a new government, saying the saffron party needed “at least 15 wickets” to form the government, a number they “cannot achieve ever”.

Patil accused the BJP of trying to topple the government for the past year, but said it failed to achieve any of its many self-imposed deadlines. He said that while “two or three troubled MLAs” may fall into the trap of Operation Lotus, it is not enough for the BJP to form the government.

Responding to Anand Singh’s claim that the decision to allot land to JSW Steel in Ballari was the trigger for his resignation, Patil said it was false.

“I am the chairman of the cabinet sub-committee formed to conduct an enquiry into the allotment of land to JSW Steel and I received a letter from Anand Singh only on Monday about the issue,” Patil said.

Patil said the subcommittee includes leaders like HK Patil and Priyank Kharge and that it will conduct a fair inquiry before submitting a report to the cabinet. As for Anand Singh’s resignation, Patil suggested that it would not be accepted by the speaker any time soon.

“There are many procedures to be followed,” he said. “First,

MLAs

must submit their resignations to the speaker in person. The speaker then issue notices and conducts an enquiry to see if the MLAs have resigned under pressure, are of sound mind etc. Resignations will be accepted only after all the procedures are completed.”

Patil insisted the government will complete its five-year term. “Nobody needs to have any doubt about the stability of this government,” Patil said, insisting he would talk to Ramesh Jarkiholi and attempt to bring him back to the fold.
