BIAL to set up collection centres in schools for plastic roads

Bengaluru: To build internal roads near the upcoming Terminal 2 at Kempegowda International Airport (

KIA

), the airport operator will set up plastic waste collection centres at three government schools it has formally adopted — Bettakote government primary school, Vijayapura government higher primary girls’ model school and Ardeshanahalli government lower primary school.

As part of Bangalore International Airport Limited’s (

BIAL

) campaign against plastic, PlasticBeku, students and teachers of these schools will be encouraged to give household plastic waste to the airport authorities.

Speaking at the campaign launch, BIAL officials said plastic collection centres will also be set up in five panchayats of Devanahalli taluk and plastic will be collected through resident welfare associations (RWAs) in north Bengaluru.

BIAL has partnered with ITC’s food division to spread awareness about plastic pollution and waste segregation at source. BIAL and ITC will roll out plastic waste collection centres in 20 more city schools.

“After a successful road trial using a mix of plastic and bitumen, BIAL has decided to go ahead with building polymerised roads that have a strong binding ability and can withstand extreme weather conditions. Based on scientific research, it has been found that these roads are expected to last longer than asphalt ones, said a BIAL spokesperson on Thursday.
