Bengaluru’s first double-decker flyover set for full operation by March
Bengaluru: The city's first double-decker flyover from Central Silk Board to Ragigudda is set to become fully operational by March. Namma Metro operator BMRCL aims to complete the remaining stretch — from the HSR Layout side to BTM Layout — by Feb.
All steel girders across the Silk Board flyover were launched recently, while deck slab casting and other works are currently underway.
BMRCL chief PRO BL Yeshwanth Chavan said, "The remaining work will be completed by Feb. Once the elevated section is ready for connectivity, the road will be opened to the public in consultation with traffic police," he said.
In July 2024, BMRCL opened the Ragigudda-Silk Board stretch of the double-decker for 5 km, including a ramp passing over the Central Silk Board flyover. However, the opposite carriageway — from Silk Board to Ragigudda — remained closed due to delays in construction. Though BMRCL initially planned to open the stretch by Dec 2025, factors such as design changes, traffic police clearance issues, and girder launching impacted the project.
Once opened, the Silk Board-Ragigudda stretch will significantly benefit motorists travelling from HSR Layout towards BTM Layout via the down ramp, as well as those heading from HSR Layout to Ragigudda using the elevated road flyover. Full commissioning of the double-decker is expected to ease congestion at the Silk Board junction, long notorious for traffic gridlocks.
A traffic police officer deployed at the junction said congestion beneath the Silk Board flyover had already reduced substantially after the Ragigudda-Silk Board elevated stretch was opened. "Traffic from HSR Layout and Hosur Road is now using the road flyover, resulting in smoother movement below. Opening the opposite side will reduce congestion, though traffic signals at the junction cannot be completely eliminated. Vehicles moving towards HSR Layout from Hosur Road and from HSR Layout towards Madiwala will continue to use the junction," the officer said.
The double-decker flyover was taken up as part of the Yellow Line Metro project, commissioned last Aug. To facilitate construction and build an interchange Metro station, the Jayadeva flyover was demolished. BMRCL began the construction of the double-decker in 2019, but delays prolonged the opening of the road flyover. In the interim, residents used the unopened stretch for jogging and morning walks.

Congestion may shift to Marenahalli Road
With the expected full commissioning of the double-decker, traffic congestion is likely to shift from Silk Board to Marenahalli Road near the Ragigudda Metro station. Increased congestion is also expected on Banashankari Road, Kanakapura Road, and roads leading towards JP Nagar.
Following the partial opening of the double-decker, traffic volume has already increased on Marenahalli Road and at the junction near Sri Raghavendra Swamy Mutt. Earlier, BBMP (Greater Bengaluru Authority's predecessor) proposed constructing an underpass at this junction to ease traffic, after elected representatives raised concerns over rising congestion.
