BENGALURU: A 48-year-old real estate businessman was arrested by Marathahalli police on Monday for allegedly murdering a 65-year-old man over financial issues.
Shivappa K, a resident of JRM Pearl Apartment, Munnekolala, near Marathahalli, allegedly assaulted Venkateshappa, a resident of Baguru village near Hoskote with a cricket bat on Saturday morning when the latter came to his residence to ask for money.
Venkateshappa sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed on Sunday night.
Marathahalli police initially registered an attempt-to-murder case and later converted it into that of murder. Police said Venkateshappa and Shivappa were relatives. Venkateshappa had helped Shivappa purchase land in his village a few years back. Later, Shivappa asked for Venkateshappa's help to raise a loan from some people. On Venkateshappa's surety, Baguru residents Nanjunda Reddy and Prakash gave Rs 7.5 lakh to Shivappa two years ago. Venkateshappa started demanding that Shivappa return the money to the duo. Shivappa gave them cheques a few days back but they bounced, following which Venkateshappa took Naidu and Prakash to Shivappa's house to ask for the money.
Shivappa reportedly was furious with Venkateshappa for bringing Naidu and Prakash to his house. So, he took a cricket bat and assaulted Venkateshappa before fleeing from the spot. Police arrested Shivappa and produced him before the court which remanded him in judicial custody.
