Twist in Bengaluru gangrape case: Man cries defamation, extortion bid; student alleges sexual assault
BENGALURU: A 19-year-old psychology student, named as a prime suspect in an extortion case, has accused her complainant and his friend of gang-raping her inside a villa in Jakkur near Yelahanka on the intervening night of February 14 and 15.
The gang-rape case was registered by Amrutahalli police in the North-East division on Sunday. Earlier, on Saturday, a 34-year-old used-car dealer from Malleshwaram had filed a police complaint accusing the student and a few others — including a TV channel reporter — of trying to extort money from him after allegedly threatening to defame him in a rape case.
A senior IPS officer said that, based on complaints made by both parties, police are investigating the matter from all possible angles. “We are looking for the businessman and his friend. We will arrest them on charges of gang-raping the woman. We are also collecting details of circumstantial evidence and other documents in connection with the extortion case,” he said.
First, the used-car dealer filed an extortion case against the student at Malleshwaram police station on February 21. Along with the student, the dealer accused a man claiming to be a reporter from a vernacular TV channel and his associates of demanding money, failing which they would air a programme alleging that he and his friend had drugged and sexually assaulted the woman.
The businessman alleged that the student and others were demanding between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 15 lakh from him.
The next day, the student filed a complaint with Amrutahalli police station, accusing the car dealer and his friend of drugging her during a post-midnight party and gang-raping her.
“Besides dealing in used cars, I have taken a villa in Jakkur on lease and rent it out for parties. My friend had booked the villa on February 14 and 15 to celebrate Valentine’s Day. As I was invited, I went to the venue post-midnight. The student, whom I had met previously at a party, accompanied me. While interacting closely, she told me that she was depressed as her father had been diagnosed with cancer and her parents were getting divorced. She behaved in an indecent manner, against which I warned her,” the used-car dealer stated in his complaint.
In her complaint, the student stated that the car dealer and his friend made her swallow a rose-coloured pill, following which she began sweating heavily and became semi-conscious. “They shifted me to a room inside the villa and raped me,” the survivor stated, adding that, “The car dealer warned me of dire consequences if I revealed the matter to anyone. I underwent a medical check-up at a hospital on February 17. Unable to bear the trauma, I narrated the incident to my elder brother, who suggested that I file a police complaint. Therefore, I am filing a delayed complaint,” she stated.
