BENGALURU: Citing urgency, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (
BBMP
) cleared taking up of
road
and
drain works
worth Rs 2,000 crore without floating tenders. The works will be undertaken through Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Ltd.
BBMP commissioner BH Anil Kumar announced this during the council meeting on Friday. He said Rs 1,500 crore works are still in the pipeline and will be cleared through KRIDL. It may be recalled that Kumar, as additional chief secretary in urban development department, didn’t clear BBMP proposals to get work executed by KRIDL without tenders, saying the suggestion lacked transparency.
“It was a different scenario when I was heading the urban development department. Here, I realise the urgency of works and felt we need to take them up through KRIDL,” Anil Kumar told TOI. The commissioner is relying on an urban development order issued on September 20 this year that the commissioner is empowered to issue works orders worth Rs 2 crore only if he feels they are emergency works and should be taken up through KRIDL. The Rs 2,000-crore worth road and rain works will be executed in smaller Rs 2-crore packages to circumvent the tender requirement.
Asked whether a seven-day short-term tender could have been floated, Kumar said the works needed to be implemented on an emergency basis. The highest number of works will be executed in Bommanahalli zone (283), followed by RR Nagar (263).
