BANGALORE: Stephanie Roberts from London, who was travelling from Mysore to Bangalore by bus on Monday morning, woke up in horror near R R Nagar: Why is the driver trying to negotiate through a stream? Her fellow traveller Shalini Kumar had to explain that when it rains in Bangalore, sometimes drains and streams overflow, even devouring people at times.

Luckily, there were no rain-related deaths after the 75.8-mm downpour lashed the city from 1 am to 7 am on Monday. But it brought back the same old miseries flooded homes, overflowing lakes and drains, inundated roads, burst sewage pipes, and traffic chaos. The worst-affected areas were RR Nagar and Mysore Road after the adjacent Nayandahalli Lake overflowed, Bannerghatta Road, Bommanahalli and Mico Layout. Monday recorded the third highest rainfall of the year. More rain is likely in the next 24-48 hours and may be a dampener on the Gowri-Ganesha festivities.
A 50-year-old womans body was found in a drain near Nayandahalli in Byatarayanapura. The police said it was a suicide she may have jumped into a canal which joined the drain. The Chikka Begur lake adjacent to Hosur Road overflowed and Vajpayee Layout downstream was so completely submerged that even fish and snakes found their way into homes there. The misery continues for Bangaloreans.
