new delhi: eminent theatre director b.v. karanth, carnatic musician m. balamurali krishna and kuchipudi guru vempati chinna satyam have been elected as fellows of sangeet natak akademi -- the national academy of music, dance and drama while 25 other artistes have been chosen for its prestigious annual awards. karanth, krishna and chinna satyam were elected by the general council of the akademi which met in mumbai on november 27 under the chairmanship of bhupen hazarika, an akademi release here said.
the council also selected 25 persons for the its annual awards which are in recognition of excellence achieved in different art forms and for sustained contribution and service in the field of performing arts. the artistes selected include abhay narayan mallik and r.n. doreswamy (music), alarmel valli (dance), bhisham sahni (theatre), kalamandalam govinda warrier (folk), suresh awasthi (overall contribution to performing arts) and prem matiyani (performing arts in the media).
