World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) superstar Jose Alberto Rodriguez, better known as Alberto Del Rio in the sporting circuit, was in the city recently as part of a special three-day visit to India. On his first trip to the country, the four-time WWE World Heavyweight champ was overwhelmed with the rousing reception he got. “Everywhere I went, fans were loud and happy to see me, and this despite the fact that I am the bad guy on television.

They were chanting my name and saying ‘si si si’ in Spanish,” says Alberto, who had heard about the massive fan following his sport has in the country from fellow star Mark Henry. “I am now looking forward to coming back in September next year with other wrestlers for a tour,” he says excitedly.
At 39, the former champ concedes that he has at the most five years left in the sport and says that his focus is to keep entertaining his fans. “Once I retire, I want a complete break from the sport, unlike my dad, Dos Caras, who continued to be associated with wrestling even after retirement. I have other projects on television back home in the USA, so I will focus on those,” says Alberto.
Quite understandable, considering that there was a lot of pressure on him since childhood to become a pro wrestler. “I come from one of the biggest wrestling families in Mexico and the weight of expectation was high. I was ready and since the age of eight I have been learning the art and training hard to achieve what I always dreamt of. At an early age I was taught that what separates good athletes from extraordinary athletes is their ability to perform in high-pressure situations and that is just what I did,” he says, adding that his most memorable moment in the ring would be his debut night with fellow wrestler Rey Mysterio, as well as the time he won the Royal Rumble in Boston.

Alberto Del Rio's WWE Debut

As for the inclusion of two Indian athletes — Lovepreet Sangha and Satender Dagar —on the WWE roster (NXT), Alberto is upbeat about their talent and expects them to be on the WWE main roster in a couple of years. “This is just the beginning of the journey and they have a lot to learn,” he signs off.
