in south Benga luru, police said. Madhu and Jyothi did their PUC from Government First Grade College, Kanakapura, between 2007 and 2009. That's where the two fell in love, said police.

However, in 2010, Jyothi tied the knot with her relative

and cut all ties with Madhu. Depressed, Madhu consumed poison and was hospitalised for over a week. However, Jyothi's married life fell apart as the couple quarrelled all the time; a year later, they split.

With Madhu's help, Jyothi arrived in Bengaluru in 2014 to complete her LLB course, said police.

“Madhu paid for Jyothi's course and also arranged for her stay in the city. He paid the advance amount for Jyothi's paying guest accommodation too,“ family sources said, adding, “Madhu even gifted a Honda Activa to Jyothi.“

Thinking that Jyothi had returned, Madhu sought her hand in marriage several times, said police. Trouble started when Madhu sensed that Jyothi had been avoiding him from early this year. “I wanted to marry her but she began avoiding me. Recently, she rejected my marriage proposal and told me that we could be just friends,“ Madhu told police. Madhu then decided to kidnap and marry Jyothi, and sought help from Shivakumar, the second accused in the case, to execute his plan. “Shivakumar is Madhu's classmate and works as a cab driver in city. He agreed to drive the cab in which Madhu would kidnap Jyothi.

Madhu planned to marry her in Madikeri,“ said police. As per their plan, on Satday evening, Madhu and urday evening, Madhu and Shivakumar accosted Jyothi the moment she got off a BMTC bus and forced her to enter Shivakumar's car. However, Jyothi put up a fight and Madhu slit her throat with a paper cutter, police said.
