BENGALURU: Five cab drivers who were indulging in robbing techies who were found waiting for transport after taking in their cabs were caught and two cabs were used for the offence were seized from them on Wednesday.
DCP (south east) Rohini Katoch Sepat said that there were growing number of cases cab driver offering lift to software engineers and private company employees drops and indulging in robbery of their passengers in the past.
With the arrest of the five we could solve only three cases. It is suspected that there were more cases that required to be solved and perhaps there are other such gangs involved in these cases,” she said.
Police said the arrested, P Chandrashekhar, M Beerappa Malakappa, 21, A Manjunath, 23, Deepak Gowda, 23 and Mallikarjuna Reddy, 22, all cab drivers were in need of money as they were into lavish lifestyle and wanted more money apart from their routine job. “They used to target software engineers and on a pretext of giving lift to these techies, who were found alone on the road side, used to rob them after taking their ATM cards and forcing them to withdraw money from ATM kiosks. We could recover Rs 23,000 from them part of the money thus robbed. They used to roam around in their cabs only in the IT corridor of the city looking for the victims,” said the police The three cases solved were reported in HAL police station in Bengaluru east.
