Bengaluru: A quartet of crafty women from
Andhra Pradesh, posing as customers, was caught red-handed while trying to flee a textile showroom in Bengaluru with 10 stolen silk saris.
The women are Medha Rajani, 38, Venkateshwaramma, 42, Malleshwari alias Ponnuru Malli, 32, and Janaki, 50, from Kondapalli village in Krishna district. Two more women managed to escape.
Cops recovered 38 saris worth Rs 17.5 lakh.
The gang was caught on Aug 25 at Chinmayi Silk House in Jayanagar's TMCS Layout. Manager Pramod said the women walked in at 4pm, pretending to shop for saris. While one of them kept Pramod busy, the others discreetly stuffed saris into their garments. Alerted by their suspicious behaviour, Pramod locked the showroom doors and called his sister, who owns the silk house. She contacted police, who arrived and detained the gang.
CCTV footage revealed two other women had visited the shop earlier and made off with eight saris. The gang told police they would steal from shops in Bengaluru and go to Andhra Pradesh by bus or train to sell the goods.
