BENGALURU: Due to persistent heavy rains in Chennai and nearby districts caused by a cyclonic storm, thirty-three flights from Chennai were redirected to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) on Monday.

Officials from Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), which manages KIA, reported the diversion of both domestic and international flights, including those operated by Indigo, SpiceJet, Etihad, Lufthansa, and Gulf Air, from Chennai. Many flights in Chennai have been canceled due to the ongoing situation.

Due to severe weather conditions, the Chennai airport has temporarily suspended arrival and departure operations until 11pm on Monday. A total of 70 flights, both arrivals and departures, were canceled due to continuous heavy rainfall.

A BIAL official stated, "Several flights have been diverted from Chennai to KIA. Chennai airport has also announced that they would remain closed for arrival operations for a specific period. Not just Chennai, even Tirupati, Visakhapatnam all these regions have issues due to weather conditions. So, there are several delays and cancellations as well. We advise passengers to check the status of their respective flights and so far, 33 flights diverted from Chennai have landed at KIA."
