1.2 lakh new voters enrol in Bengaluru

BENGALURU: Two special drives conducted to ensure no eligible Bengalurean is deprived of the right to vote have succeeded in enrolling around 1.2 lakh fresh voters, taking the strength of the city’s electorate past 90 lakh. The number of

is 3.46 lakh, swelling the ranks of the electorate to 5.06 crore.


The final draft rolls for 14 of the state’s 28 parliamentary constituencies going to the polls in the first phase on April 18 is expected to be published on March 27. According to Election Commission officials, about 72% of the work is yet to be completed.

, district electoral officer and BBMP commissioner, said around 1.2 lakh fresh applications to enrol were received in the city. “Updating these applications is under process and it will be completed shortly,” Prasad said. “All applications received till March 16 will be considered for enrolment. We don’t want anybody to be left out.”

The number of fresh applications was the highest in Bengaluru Urban at 61,427, followed by Bengaluru South (24,263), Bengaluru North (20,263) and Bengaluru Central (14,941). The draft electoral rolls published on January 16 put the electorate in Bengaluru at 88.34 lakh.

During a review meeting, chief electoral officer Sanjiv Kumar said the pendency of disposal of enrolment forms is very high and all DEOs have been asked to complete the process by Monday for constituencies going to the polls on April 18.
