Want my in-laws to know they have failed to break my spirit: Gulshan Parveen

New Delhi: “The

Supreme

Court’s verdict is like a slap on the faces of those who divorced their wives on a whim by just uttering three words,” said Gulshan

Parveen

, a resident of Rampur in Uttar Pradesh and one of the petitioners against the practice of

triple

talaq. Parveen’s voice sounded confident, a kind which comes after winning an emotionally and tangibly stressful battle.

An English literature postgraduate, Parveen entered into an arranged marriage on April 20, 2013. “My husband would continuously threaten to give me triple talaq if I failed to bring more dowry. Both of us are educated. He is a B Com graduate and works in a Noida firm. But I was subjected to constant domestic violence and harassed from money for over two years. We had given them Rs 2.5 lakh at the time of marriage but there was pressure on me to bring another Rs 2.5 lakh. Where could I have arranged for such a large sum? I did not have a job and my father is a small farmer in Rampur. They threw me and my then two-year-old son from the house,” said Parveen.

The 30-year-old could not take it and filed a complaint against her husband in 2015.

Parveen said that her husband then produced a talaqnama (divorce notice) on a Rs 10 stamp paper to show that he has already divorced her. When she refused to accept it, he approached the Rampur family

court

for dissolution of the marriage based on the talaqnama. "He also announced the divorce to the entire neighbourhood," she said.

Her husband was later arrested on charges of dowry harassment and criminal intimidation.

“I felt insulted. It was almost like I had no say in my marriage. He threw me out of the house and decided to end the marriage,” said Parveen, as she fought back tears.

She filed a petition in the apex court last year for abolishing the practice of instant divorce. Her petition was later clubbed with that of Uttarakhand-based Shayara Bano.

Currently based in Delhi, Parveen today shuttles between a rented accommodation in the capital city and her brother’s house in Ghaziabad.

“I want to look into the eye of my husband and in-laws now. I want them to see that they have failed to break my spirit,” added Parveen, as she cuddled her toddler.
