SHAHJAHANPUR: A truck carrying 64 bovines was seized from the national highway near
Katra
on Friday while it was allegedly being taken to a slaughter house in
Rampur
from
Etawah
, police said. The driver managed to escape but his accomplice has been arrested and a knife had also been recovered.
The accused has been identified as
Mehboob Khan, a resident of Rampur district. He told police that the bovines were being smuggled to a slaughter house in Rampur and they were only involved in transportation.
As the cattle were crammed inside the truck, 16 of them died. Police have sent the cows to shelter house and have buried the dead ones.
“Bovines smugglers often try to smuggle cattle to Rampur via
Bareilly
and that is why I have kept few informers who keep an eye on all sensitive vehicles. Even on Friday, one of my informers played a key role in getting information. We have sent the accused to jail,” station officer Narendra Singh Yadav told TOI.
