SHAHJAHANPUR: A UK court has granted temporary custody of slain NRI businessman Sukhjeet Singh’s children to their paternal grandmother for a period of six weeks. A decision to the effect was taken last week.

A British citizen, Sukhjeet, 35, was allegedly killed by his British wife

Ramandeep Kaur

and her paramour, Gurpreet Singh alias Miththu, on September 1 while the couple was holidaying along with their children here. Sukhjeet’s body with his throat slit was found in his house at Basantapur village in Shahjahanpur.

While Gurpreet was arrested at IGI airport in Delhi while trying to leave the country,

Ramandeep

was held in Shahjahanpur. Both were sent to jail.

With one parent dead and another in jail, the fate of the children was uncertain. Ramandeep’s parents, Paul Singh Mann and his wife Amarjeet Kaur who are British citizens, applied for custody of the children in a London court.

The court served a notice on Vansh Kaur, Sukhjeet's mother, and his sister

Kulvinder Kaur Turna

, who also lives in UK, to appear before it on October 1. The temporary custody of the kids was awarded to Vansh Kaur for six weeks.

TOI spoke with Kulvinder Turna over the phone about the custody case. She said, “We have got the custody of the children for a period of six weeks and the final decision in this case will come later. The children are happy to be with their grandmother. God is with us and we believe that the permanent custody of the children will be given to us.”

Sukhjeet’s family believes that the custody battle for the children was to divert Sukhjeet’s family’s attention from the murder case in India by Ramandeep‘s parents.

While Sukhjeet’s family members moved to the UK for the custody court hearing, Ramandeep’s advocate here applied for the bail in the court of district judge in Shahjahanpur. The bail application will be heard on November 3 and police have been asked to provide the details of the investigation.

So far, Shahjahanpur police have not filed a chargesheet in the case as the investigating officer of this case, Rajesh Singh, has been transferred to Bahraich and another officer is yet to join the

Banda

police station.
