Newlywed bride, family of 4, man-daughter asleep on cot among 9 killed in UP crashes

Bareilly: A newlywed bride returning after her vidaai ceremony, an entire family of four on a motorcycle, and a man and his 8-year-old daughter sleeping on a cot outside their home were among nine people killed in three road accidents across UP. The crashes in Shahjahanpur and Sambhal also left one person critical in hospital, police said.

A speeding tanker rammed a car on Shahjahanpur-Palia highway near Rautapur village under Khutar police station limits, killing four people. The car was carrying family members returning after the vidaai ceremony of Kalpana, 25, who had married Aviral of Puwaya area on April 25. Kalpana, her sisters-in-law Seshri, 28, and Veena, 35, died on the spot, while driver Nirdesh, 29, succumbed during treatment. A fifth occupant remained critical in hospital.

The second crash wiped out a family of four on Puwaya bypass after a speeding SUV hit their motorcycle head-on. Police said the bike was travelling in the wrong direction. Rider Arun, 35, and his children Diksha, 10, and Naitik, 3, died on the spot, while his wife Seema, 32, succumbed in hospital. Shahjahanpur SSP Saurabh Dixit said the Bolero driver fled the spot and police were trying to trace him.

Late Wednesday night, a speeding car with a Budaun registration number ran over a cot outside a home in Duwari Kalan village under Junawai police station in Sambhal’s Gunnaur tehsil. Salim, 40, and his daughter Alshifa, 8, who were sleeping outdoors, were dragged along with the cot before the car hit an electricity pole and an e-rickshaw .Family members rushed them to the community health centre, where doctors declared them dead. Villagers overpowered the driver while he was trying to flee, and police took him into custody, SHO Dheeraj Singh said.

Police registered FIRs in all three cases and sent the bodies for post-mortem. Officials said investigations were underway and strict action would follow against those responsible.
