Meat trader’s death: Two cops booked for assault now charged with culpable homicide

Mohammed Salim Qureshi on suspicion of cow slaughter. Qureshi died at a Delhi hospital on Thursday. Besides, two more names — Firdaus Anjum, 48, and Naushad, alias, Bade, 45, have been added to the FIR. The two men are police informer and based on their tip-off, cops arrested and later allegedly assaulted the meat exporter on June 14.

“On June 16, an FIR was lodged against constables Shreepal Verma and Harish Chandra, posted at Kankartola police outpost, under IPC sections 211 (false charge of offence made with intent to injure), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation). A day later, they, along with Kankartola police outpost in-charge Ali Mia Zaidi, were suspended,” Bahadur, who is SP (traffic), but is currently discharging the duties of the SSP, said.

On Thursday night, hours after the meat trader died, police received another complaint by Qureshi’s brother. “Following the complaint, we added two more names to the FIR. One of the accused, Anjum, was arrested and jailed in a case of extortion on Wednesday,” said the SSP.

Circle officer Neeti Dwivedi, who is tasked with inquiring into the matter, said, “The postmortem report of Qureshi did not fully establish the cause of death so we have sent the viscera sample to the forensic science laboratory (FSL) in

Agra

.”

Meanwhile, the deceased’s brother, Mohammed Naim, said, “My brother was the sole breadwinner of the family. He is survived by his wife Farzana and two sons, Faizan and Tanveer.Anjum runs the banquet from where my brother was picked up. On June 14, he called Salim to his property, where the two constables were already present. They tried to extort money from my brother. When he refused, they threatened to implicate him in a false case of cow slaughter and later assaulted him.”
