BAREILLY: A 17-year-old girl from Moosajhag village in Uttar Pradesh's Budaun district caused a stir on Tuesday evening when she climbed up a water tank and threatened to jump.
The incident reminded people of a famous scene from the movie Sholay, where the character Veeru climbs atop a water tank to fulfil his wish to marry Basanti.
The girl’s family had refused to allow her to marry the person she loved following which she threatened to harm herself by jumping off the overhead water tank.
As per the report, she wanted to marry her sister's brother-in-law, but her family did not approve and wanted her to marry someone else.
Locals alerted the police, and a team arrived to help. They talked to her and kept the crowd away while another group of villagers climbed up the tank to bring her down safely.
The girl kept threatening to jump, but the police were able to calm her down, and after a lot of effort, they managed to get her down from the tank.
The girl was then handed over to her family, and police counselled both her and her family.
The police advised her family to reconsider their decision, and they urged the girl not to take such extreme steps.
