Pilibhit: A local lawyer, Narendra Singh Mahal, who had allegedly helped to procure a fake passport for Nabha jailbreak case accused Gurjeet Singh Ladda, was brought to Pilibhit on Friday morning from Delhi and sent to jail.
Mahal had flown to Canada in September last year. He was detained by airport authorities in Delhi when he landed at Indira Gandhi International Airport on Wednesday night. They informed Pilibhit police and a team was sent from here to bring Mahal back. The team included the investigation officer in the fake passport case.
According to superintendent of police, Pilibhit, Kalanidhi Naithani, Mahal was also involved in filing an application for another passport on August 8 on behalf of Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi Ghanshyampuria, one of the main accused of Nabha jailbreak case. The lawyer had applied by giving a false name, Paramjeet Singh, and address of Ganesh Ganj locality in Puranpur city under Puranpur Kotwali police station.
But police busted the fake passport network, he added.
During interrogation, Mahal confessed that he had managed to procure fake passports for Gurjeet Singh Ladda, his wife Ramandeep Kaur and his two-year-old daughter, said Jitendra Singh Yadav, investigation officer of the case.
Ladda was preparing to flee the country along with his family but was arrested by Punjab anti-terrorist squad on September 18 from in Patiala district while he was on way to the airport.
An FIR was lodged against Mahal on September 16 for cheating and forgery, police added.
