PILIBHIT: Four dogs saved their master’s life by forcing a tiger which had barged into his small hut on Monday night to flee. The incident took place at

Khapatia

village under

Deuria

police station, said range officer of Deuria JP

Pandey

.

Sher Mohammad

was sitting on guard for the night amid his wheat field to protect the crop from herbivores. The agricultural field is barely 200 meters from Deuria compartment of Deuria forest range, Pilibhit Tiger Reserve. Suddenly, a tiger forced its way into the hut. Before the man could react, his four dogs pounced on the big cat and forced it to retreat.

A shaken Sher Mohammad went out and set dry sugarcane leaves afire and started to scream for help. On hearing his cries, villagers rushed to the spot. In the meantime, the tiger disappeared into the forest.

Pandey said over the past seven years, not a single case of tiger attack had been reported from Deuria area. “As this range is adjacent to

Mala

forest range, which has a large number of big cats, this forest area also sees frequent movement of tigers,” he added.

A forest team has now been deployed in the area to keep a watch on movement of tigers and alert villagers in case a big cat is spotted.
