BAREILLY: A circle head warden and barrack in charge at central jail were suspended after an inmate committed suicide inside an under-construction barrack near the jail hospital on Monday afternoon. The prisoner’s body was spotted by a prison guard.
According to reports, 42-year-old Nooniram resident of Nandosi village was serving life time imprisonment after being convicted for a murder in 2003.
Jail officials said that the inmate was undergoing treatment for depression at the hospital for the past two years.
Nooniram was shifted to the central jail in 2006 and had been suffering from depression for the past few years.
On Monday, the inmate reportedly gave the prison guards a slip after finishing his breakfast and then went to an under construction barrack where he committed suicide by hanging himself with a towel. When he did not return for quite sometime, the guards launched a search operation, during which one of them found his body.
The incident was reported to jail authorities, who immediately rushed to the spot.
Talking to TOI, Central Jail superintendent A K Rai said, “The inmate was undergoing treatment for depression for past two years. After initial enquiry, two jail officials including circle head warden and other was suspended for negligence on duty. Postmortem reports are still awaited, but medical officers have confirmed death due to hanging.”
