Pilibhit: Two people, including a police constable, were killed after a speeding dumper ran over their bike near Gauhania crossing on NH-731A in Pilibhit district early Monday.
Police said the accident occurred around 12:30 am, shortly after the constable, Shivam Baliyan (30), completed his duty and was heading home to the reserve police lines with his friend, Bobby Chaudhary (25). As they reached the Gauhania crossing, the dumper—carrying coarse sand and en route to Uttarakhand—struck their bike, causing both to fall. The vehicle then ran over them and killing them on the spot.
Shivam, a resident of Bijnor, had been posted at Sungarhi police station for the past two years. Bobby, the pillion rider, was from the Bagh Gulsher Khan locality in Pilibhit city.
Their bodies were sent for autopsy, and the dumper driver was arrested shortly after the incident.
A ceremonial farewell was held for Shivam at the district police headquarters, attended by SP Abhishek Yadav, ASP Vikram Dahiya, and other personnel. His body was later sent to his hometown for final rites.
Shivam was the only son of Hemant Baliyan, a former police officer.
He had joined the force in 2017 under the deceased dependent quota following his father's death. He is survived by his mother, a pregnant wife, and a 7-year-old son.
SP Yadav said the family would be provided financial assistance as per departmental policy. Inspector (Crime) Sarvesh Kumar confirmed that the dumper driver has been charged under relevant sections of the BNS, including Section 106(1) for causing death by negligence.
