Officials said that the incident took place late on Tuesday night when Mishra came to the police station and insisted on filing an FIR in a matter concerning one Dinesh Singh. “After a heated argument, she slapped a constable who was on duty. The latter slapped her too. We have suspended the constable and have booked both Mishra and the cop,” said an official.

Inspector Vijay Pal Singh, in-charge, Cantt police station, said, “We have already booked the constable as he slapped a woman. We have also lodged an FIR against the BJP Bareilly unit secretary under IPC sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace).”

According to police, Dinesh Singh is an Army constable who is presently deputed in Kashmir. His family lives in Defence Colony in Cantt area. On Tuesday night, his neighbour Sumit Gupta was reportedly consuming alcohol along with his friends at the unoccupied plot adjacent to his house.

“When Singh’s family protested, the group of men allegedly assaulted them. They called Jyoti Mishra and even made a police complaint. A team visited the spot and brought the two parties to the police station,” said the official.

BJP’s Bareilly district president Ravindra Rathore said that Mishra was provoked by the police and the accused constable used indecent language during their argument. “If our leaders or workers are found erring, we will take prompt disciplinary action against them,” he said.
