PILIBHIT: A 31-year-old debt-ridden businessman killed himself by jumping into the feeder canal of the Sharda river after suffering losses in online rummy on Thursday evening. The deceased has been identified as Amit Kumar Gupta of Kalinagar town in Pilibhit district. The body was retrieved by divers of Sashastra Seema Bal’s (SSB) 49th battalion on Friday afternoon, and has been sent for autopsy.

Madhotanda police station SHO Achal Kumar said, “The deceased was addicted to online rummy, and he borrowed Rs 5-6 lakh from friends but suffered losses. His family ties also suffered.” His family members were not in a position to talk about the incident.

After Gupta jumped off from the canal bridge on the Kalinagar-Madhotanda road on Thursday evening, his cousins and friends attempted to rescue him but failed. Nine local divers also failed to find the body on Thursday night. The SSB divers arrived with a raft on Friday morning and retrieved the body in a seven-hour operation.
