Bareilly: A Bangladeshi migrant was allegedly fraudently made the owner of land worth Rs 3 crore by a gang, which included a local revenue officer who was suspended after the fraud came to light. The woman was arrested for her involvement in the scheme.
Renu, who goes only by her first name, lived in a hut in Goch village of Pilibhit district. She was approached by Deepak, her distant relative, and was convinced to get the fake land deeds registered in her name. She was paid Rs 15,000 in exchange for it.
"She claimed the accused pretended to be landowners and she was made to believe that they were using her to save taxes. Deepak had told her that if the owner sold the land in someone else's name, they would save some lakhs of rupees. Renu said she did not realise they were committing fraud," SP (City) Manush Pareek said.
Lekhpal Sawan Kumar, introduced to Renu by Deepak on Oct 16, made her the owner of 1,760 square yard plot of land and executed eight deeds in her name. Each deed was valued at Rs 37 lakh.
A fake bank account and an Aadhaar card were made for her and they were used to made transporter Vijay Agarwal the final owner of the piece of land.
The police are now searching for Agarwal and his manager. The SP said Mohammad Ilyas, who was the original owner of the land, filed a a police complaint on Jan 3, alleging that the revenue officer and his associates had taken over his plot through using fake deeds.
Pareek said, "Renu was arrested from Pilibhit and sent to jail on Saturday."
