RAMPUR: After a biker’s throat was accidentally slit by a Chinese kite thread (manja) here, police teams led by SP, Rampur, Sanjeev Tyagi raided shops and godowns of kite-makers in Nasrullha Khan bazaar, Purana Ganj and Meston Ganj areas. After the raids, six people were arrested for selling the Chinese ‘manjha’, sale of which has been banned by the Allahabad high court earlier.
Speaking with TOI, Sanjeev Tyagi, said, “The drive against Chinese ‘manja’ was launched in the city following the death of the garment businessman Anas Shamsi.”
Tyagi said police have launched a campaign to identify both those who use it to fly kites as well as shops that sell these lethal threads. “We have also sought a report into the death of Anas Shamsi. The local intelligence unit officials have been instructed to file a report against buyers and sellers of Chinese ‘manjha’ in the city.”
A 23-year-old businessman died on Tuesday evening after his throat got accidentally slit by Chinese kite thread while he was riding a motorcycle near Green Wood School on Rahe-Raza Road in the city.
Anas Shamsi, whose marriage was due in October, died on the spot due to excessive bleeding. Passers-by rushed Shamsi to the district hospital, but doctors declared him brought dead. After the accident, people and several local leaders held a protest against the sale of Chinese threads, which are very sharp and often lead to such incidents.
