6 booked for killing 23yo woman over additional dowry

Pilibhit: Following a court order, an FIR was registered on Monday against six family members for allegedly killing a 23-year-old woman over Rs 2 lakh in cash and gold jewellery as additional dowry in Bhanpur village under Jahanabad police station's jurisdiction.The victim's mother, Pushpa Gangwar of Amra Karor village under Bisalpur Kotwali police station limits, stated in her court complaint that her daughter, Parul Gangwar, was killed by her husband, Vidya Prakash, and his family on Oct 12 last year. She claimed that despite filing written complaints with the police and submitting one through the integrated public grievance redressal system (IGRS), no FIR was lodged.Pushpa said she gave adequate dowry at the time of Parul's marriage in 2023, but her in-laws were not satisfied. Parul faced physical and mental abuse for additional dowry. Despite her repeated pleas that she had no money to meet their demands, the harassment continued. On the day of the incident, Pushpa received a call informing her of Parul's death. When she arrived at her daughter's home, she found her body on the floor, while her in-laws had fled. The police sent the body for an autopsy, which confirmed death by strangulation. Jahanabad SHO Manoj Kumar Mishra said Vidya Prakash and five family members were charged under BNS Section 85 (subjecting a woman to cruelty by husband or his relatives), Section 80(2) (dowry death), and relevant sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act.
