SHAHAJAHANPUR: A 50-year-old man died and four schoolchildren were injured after they came in contact with a live high-tension electric wire in Chaapabhojhi village under

Khuthar

block in

Shahjahanpur

district on Thursday evening.

Police said an overhead high-tension electric wire was snapped after it got entangled with timbers loaded on a tractor-trolley at a link road near

Khuthar-Mailani

state highway.

Babu Basheer, along with the four children, whom he was accompanying on way back home after their school, suddenly came in the contact of the live wire and got electrocuted, said police.

All the victims were rushed to a local healthcare centre, where two children with minor burn injuries were discharged after preliminary medication, while the other two children and Babu were referred to the primary health centre at Khuthar, but Babu was declared dead upon arrival at PHC. The other two children — identified as Priya Kumari (8) and

Anshika

(10) — with severe burn injuries were further referred to the Shahjahanpur district hospital.

Meanwhile, police have sent the body for post-mortem.

According to locals, the wires are weakened, loose and hanging low. The matter was brought to the notice of the power department many times, but nothing was done, they added.

Khuthar police station SHO Birja Ram told TOI, “The children were returning home with their neighbour Babu when they came in contact with the high-tension electric wire and got electrocuted. Babu died in this incident. Two children have been discharged after providing preliminary medication, while the other two children with severe burn injuries have been admitted to the district hospital.”
