Shahjahanpur: Lakhimpur Kheri police has rescued 42 calves from being smuggled to Nepal through Lakhimpur forest areas and arrested two people while six others managed to escape.
Police suspected that the calves were being smuggled to Nepal either for sacrifice or slaughter.
Nighasan police station SHO Ajay Yadav said acting on a tip-off on Sunday night, he raided a mango orchard where calves were assembled, and rescued the animals.
SHO said the arrested accused — Shakir Khan and Jameel Khan, residents of Pathanpurva village of Nighasan — along with others were planning to send the calves to Nepal through forest area. They also disclosed the names of their six accomplices, said SHO.
An FIR has been registered against eight people under the Uttar Pradesh Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, 1955.
Yadav told TOI, “The accused are involved in a big cattle smuggling network and have links in various parts of India and Nepal. We have launched manhunts for the other six accused.”
