road under Aonla police station here on Saturday night. The truck driver fled the spot leaving behind the vehicle. All the victims died in hospital. Police have lodged an FIR and are investigating the matter.

According to police, the accident took place around 9:30 pm on Saturday evening. The five people were on the motorbike when the truck coming from the opposite direction ran over them. The dead have been identified as Kamalveer (29),

(16), Savitri (30) and four-year-old Lavish. Two-year-old Ayush sustained severe injuries and was admitted to district hospital. They were returning home after attending a marriage function.

said, “There was a marriage function in the family. My sister’s husband, Bablu Singh, a resident of Sirauli village, works as a labourer in Chandigarh and he could not come to attend the marriage of his cousin, Cinnu. On Saturday night, Bablu’s cousin Kamalveer had taken his cousin Roopwati and Savitri, along with her two kids, to the marriage on his motorbike.”

“They were returning home when the accident took place. On hearing the news of the accident, I rushed to the spot and informed police on Dial 100. All of the victims were critically injured and were rushed to the district hospital. The four succumbed to their injuries during treatment,” said Mahendra.

Station house officer of Aonla police station, Pankaj Verma, said that following a complaint by the kin of the deceased, an FIR was lodged against the accused driver under sections 279 (rash driving) and 304 A (causing death by negligence) of IPC. “We have seized the truck and are conducting raids to nab the driver,” Verma said.
