AURANGABAD: A number of events have been held in the city to mark the passing away of educationist Mohammed

Ashfaq Ahmed

, who passed away in the city on October 20 at the age of 68.

Ahmed, who set up several educational institutes in different parts of the country, is known for his contribution to founding some of the best education institutes in the city. He is known in

Marathwada

as a man of great integrity who made a selfless contribution to the education of the region.

One of the oldest schools in the city, Burhani National School, held a condolence meeting to honour Ahmed, who is survived by wife and two daughters.

After joining government multipurpose high school in 1976, he quit in a year and founded Dr Zakir Husain High School in 1977, later becoming its first headmaster. In 1983 he headed a school in

Malegaon

for a couple of years. In 1984, he along with Mohammed Afzal Khan, laid the foundation of Al-Heera Education Society in Aurangabad. They founded the Iqra School, one of the most prominent

Urdu

schools in the state. At the time of his death, he was serving as president of the society.

In 1984 he was appointed national president of the Student Islamic Organisation.
