Aurangabad: A 25-year-old motorist was reportedly punched by a traffic constable for not wearing a helmet on Monday. The incident happened at 10.30 am at the Barapulla Gate.
Imran Khan Sarwar Khan, a resident of Himayat Bagh area on Delhi Gate Road, and a PhD student at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University. On Monday morning, he reportedly left home in a hurry on his two-wheeler to drop his younger sister off at the examination centre of Milind College.
While coming back, Khan got stuck in the traffic snarl at the bottleneck of the Barapulla Gate near the Aurangabad police commissinerate, where he was caught by a traffic constable for driving without wearing a helmet.
Eyewitnesses said an argument broke out between the two, and the constable reportedly punched him, causing his nose to bleed. Nearby motorists began to object to the cop's action, and he reportedly fled the spot fearing backlash.
Khan then decided to approach the city police chief to lodge a complaint.
Sources said that senior police officers were found defending the errant constable for his alleged actions.
When contacted, commissioner of police Amitesh Kumar said, "We shall look in to the matter. But I can say that the constable in question is not the kind to assault or punch anybody on the street."
