AURANGABAD: In a bid to spread awareness to eradicate corneal blindness in Marathwada and restore vision through eye donation and transplantation Vyankatesh Pariwar, Aurangabad-based NGO, took out a rally, on Monday in Aurangabad.
Vyankatesh Pariwar, an NGO launched by a couple hailing from Aurangabad - Kishore and Kanchan Soni - started eye donation campaign since 2000 with an aim on eradicating corneal blindness, said, “Our aim is to bridge the gap between demand and supply of cornea.”
Soni said, “Around 3000 people suffer from corneal blindness in Marathwada, while only 100 transplants are reported every year.”
“Hence we have been striving to create awareness among the people so that they should know the importance of eye donation,” he said.
The NGO, which has been organizing a series of awareness campaigns to combat corneal blindness, took out a rally on Monday to mark Mahesh Navami, from Khadkeshwar which passed from Aurangapura, Gulmandi, Rangargalli, Machahalikhadak, Paithan Gate and culminated at Nirala Bazaar.
Meanwhile, to spread eye donation, the NGO has also launched a website on which people interested to donate their eyes can fill online eye donor registration form to give their consent. Over 50,000 people from across the country have given online consent to donate their eyes, Soni said.
