AURANGABAD: The
met department, on Wednesday, issued warnings for
rainfall exceeding
70mm and reaching upto 110mm at
isolated places
in the region during the next 48 hours.
The warning, which has come amidst light to medium showers at Aurangabad and parts of
Marathwada
in the past few days, has put the government machinery on its toes.
The city has already experienced over 30mm rainfall on Wednesday as widespread heavy showers were reported for almost two hours. The downpour arrested the movement of vehicular traffic and caused water logging in some areas.
Senior officials from divisional commissionerate said that different district-level units of disaster management have been asked to remain alert to deal with any situation arising out of rainfall. As per the forecast, at least 25% area of the region could receive heavy rainfall, authorities said.
As per official data, seven revenue circles from Marathwada received excess rainfall (more than 65mm) during the past 24 hours, which ended at 8.30am on Wednesday. Jalna (21.11mm), Osmanabad (20.68mm) and Beed (15.98mm) are among the districts that received maximum showers.
Marathwada, which comprises of eight districts, has already received 106.54mm rainfall since June 1. It accounts for 156.5% of expected rainfall thus far and nearly 14% of around 779mm average rainfall received by the region between June 1 and October 31.
The expected heavy rainfall could give further impetus to sowing activity in the region. According to the agricultural department, sowing activity has already begun in few areas of Marathwada owing to the desired moisture of soil linked with consecutive spells of light to moderate rainfall.
Meanwhile, several schools which have reopened coinciding with the beginning of rainy season, witnessed children clad in their rain gears.
“It is fun to reach school during rainy season. My parents worry that I will develop cold or fever if I get wet, but I am least bothered about it,” said
Mayuresh Kulkarni, a student.
