CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR: Gold prices continued to surge ahead of the Gudi Padwa festival, with 10 gm of the 24-carat yellow metal priced at Rs 60,800 on Tuesday.

Automobile showrooms, electronics goods shops and malls were decked up to welcome consumers.

Ratnakar Dahilwal, a jeweller, said that increased gold prices would not dissuade buyers. "We hope that the prices remain stable and attract many buyers. Even if the gold prices are rising, many people traditionally consider the festival auspicious for buying gold and other items," he said.

While Gudi Padwa is traditionally considered the beginning of mango season, the city markets witnessed relatively lower arrival of the king of fruits.

Alphonso mangoes are selling at around Rs1,800 per dozen in the local market.

Many citizens said that they are missing the traditional summer heat.

"The weather conditions are quite unusual this time of the year. The weather, however, should not dampen the festive spirit," said Yogesh Kulkarni, a schoolteacher.

At 30.8 degrees Celsius, the minimum temperature at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar was below normal by six units.

Gold, electronics, automobile and real estate markets are also witnessing a boom. The festival is considered as one of the most auspicious times to start new ventures and to purchase valuables.

A major buying spree was also observed for decorative flowers and different pooja items.
