AURANGABAD: Several policemen, including additional SP Vikrant Deshmukh, were injured in a clash between two communities at Jalna’s

Chandoi Ekko

village. The clash had broken out over the naming of a newly constructed illegal gate on Thursday afternoon.

Two offences have been registered — one for attacking policemen and rioting, and the second for burning tyres on the road.

To bring the situation under control, police had to fire tear gas and plastic bullets.

The process of carrying out the panchanama to ascertain the number of plastic bullets and tear gas shells fired was underway till late on Thursday. Police have also launched a combing operation to arrest suspect rioters.

Superintendent of police

Harssh Poddar

, while talking to TOI, said “A total of 18 people have been arrested. Four policemen and officers had to be rushed to the hospital, while several others sustained minor injuries following heavy stone-pelting from both the sides. The situation is now under control.”

According to the police, earlier in March this year, an unauthorized gate was built at the entrance of the village having equal population of people from Vanjari and

Maratha

communities.

Since the construction of the gate, a section of the village started making efforts to name it after BJP stalwart Gopinath Munde, while the other section wanted it named Maratha warrior king

Shivaji Maharaj

. A flex bearing Munde’s name was put at the gate along with installation of a life-size statue of Shivaji Maharaj. This led to all the ruckus.
