AURANGABAD: The continuing medical education (CME) conference held at the Government Medical College and Hospital (
GMCH
) on Saturday witnessed the discussion on measures for prevention of post-partum haemorrhage (
PPH
) by experts.
Early detection of PPH, fast response and formation of a rapid response team were the highlights of the event.
Obstetrics and
gynaecology
(OBGY) department, GMCH, Medical Research Society, GMCH, along with Aurangabad Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society (AOGS) organised the CME, which was inaugurated by GMCH acting dean Shivaji Sukre.
A woman can bleed more than 500ml within 24 hours of childbirth, this is called post-partum haemorrhage.
Shrinivas Gadappa, head of department of OBGY, said, “In PPH, there is a loss of blood at the rate of 1 litre per minute, hence it is important for the first-level care providers to be able to prevent the bleeding until the mother is brought to the tertiary care centre,” Gadappa said.
He added that in the the last two years, lives of 67 women have been saved in the GMCH due to timely and planned intervention Intrauterine balloon tamponade has been used for limiting ongoing uterine blood loss.
