AURANGABAD: Villagers in Jalna chased two men travelling in a car - suspecting them to be child lifters - and beat them up, before the police could reach the spot and rescue them.

The car had earlier rammed a two-wheeler driven by a senior citizen, who was travelling with his two grandchildren. The senior citizen and one child fell off the two-wheeler, while the other child fell on the car and held onto the car's wipers, while crying out for help.

The villagers suspected the men travelling in the car to be kidnappers on the move and chased them. They managed to halt the car after after four kilometres and brutally assaulted the men. One man managed to flee the spot, but the other was brutally assaulted, the police said.

Bhokardan police station's assistant inspector Ratnadip Jogdand said a car was heading towards Sillod, when it rammed a moped on which a 60-year-old man along with his two grandchildren was travelling. The driver got scared and tried to speed away. However, the villagers gave a chase and halted the car. When the Bhokardan police team reached the spot, the mob was beating up the driver and some people were damaging the car.
