AURANGABAD: Four policemen have been suspended after they were caught
gambling at an empty quarter of a police residential colony in Jintur town in Parbhani district on Saturday.
Parbani superintendent of police Krishnakant Upadhyay confirmed that the empty quarter at the police colony was being used as a gambling den. “We have taken serious cognizance of the incident and suspended the four accused policemen.”
The officer added that police action against crooks from within and outside the department would continue.
The accused — head constable Ashok Kisharao Hinge (48), police naiks Kishor Yogiraj Bhumkar (35) and Tryambak Bade (45) and constable Pandurang Tupsundar (32) — were arrested from the spot along with playing cards and Rs 1,500 in cash.
Based on a complaint lodged by police constable Gajanan Shirsagar, an offence was registered against the four under relevant sections of The Maharashtra Prevention of Gambling Act, 1887.
A team led by assistant superintendent of police Shravan Dath S carried out a raid on Saturday evening, following specific tip-off about an empty quarter in the police colony being used as a gambling den.
The raid was conducted in accordance with the
model code of conduct guidelines to police for bringing a check on all illicit businesses and criminal activities to ensure free, fair, fearless and smooth elections.
Dath said that a detailed report about the raid was forwarded to the superintendent of police for administrative action against the accused policemen.
To ensure that the case reaches its logical end, a police sub-inspector has been appointed as an investigation officer. Usually, men from the constabulary investigate gambling cases. Sources in the police department said that even Nanded range inspector general of police’s office has taken cognizance of the case.
